Pocket-Monkey is a free site for playing turn-based games like Backgammon, Chess, etc. (see the full list below). It's WebTV-, MSN-TV-, and Java-friendly. You and your opponent don't have to be online at the same time to play, so you can play as quickly or slowly as you like. If you're both online at the same time, though, the site realizes that and helps you play in near-real-time.

Our current set of games includes:

  • Backgammon, Backgammon Match, Nackgammon, HyperGammon, LongGammon, and other variations
  • Checkers/Draughts (and several variations)
  • Chess
  • Halma
  • Four-In-A-Row
  • Gomoku, Gomoku - Connect 6
  • Mill
  • RadarWar (similar to Battleship®)
  • RadarWar Salvo
  • Reversi (sometimes known as Othello®) and Anti-Reversi
  • Strategy (similar to Stratego®)
  • Tic-Tac-Toe

If you have a Java-enabled browser, you can use the Java versions of the games; if not, we currently have experimental support for systems like WebTV, MSN-TV, and other non-Java systems.

Other features of the site include:

  • Tournaments - Pit your skills against the best on the site!
  • Elo Ratings - All games have full Elo ratings (well, okay, except Tic-Tac-Toe).
  • Player Forum - We have lots of message areas where you can discuss game strategy, or just pass the time with a joke or two.
  • Player Directory - There's a directory of people here at Pocket-Monkey, so you can always find someone to play with. (Being listed in the directory is optional.)
  • Private Invitations - When you find someone to play with, you can send them a private game invitation -- if they're not around now, they'll get it when they next log in.
  • Open Invitations - If you'd like to let people come to you, you can post an open invitation which anyone can accept. Or you can go look at the open invitations and see if there's a game you'd like to play already there. It's a great way to meet people you wouldn't have met otherwise!
  • Color Themes - The website has multiple color themes, so you can choose a set of colors that look good to you on your monitor.
  • Private Messages - Any player can send a private message to any other player; like private invitations, if the other player isn't around, they'll get the message later when they come back.
  • Turn Notifications - The site can notify you when its your turn via email (this is optional).
