If you use the Chrome (edit: or Firefox, or Microsoft Edge) browser, you'll notice that Java doesn't work on it. That's a policy decision by them: Google (edit: and Mozilla, and Microsoft) decided to stop supporting the mechanism (called NPAPI) that the Java plug-in uses to hook into the browser. The browser now gives you a message saying the plug-in is unsupported.
I can't find an official Microsoft page confirming it for Edge, but there are lots of articles about it.
Does the browser tell you that? No, it just acts like the plugin isn't installed at all.
Not even if you enable the "debug" log with the "verbose" option? No.
Then what does it do? It shows you a message saying you need Java and gives you a link to Oracle's website to download it, even though doing so will do you no good whatsoever.
(They did finally update Chrome to actually say what was going on.)
I'm not saying that discontinuing support for the mechanism (called "NPAPI") is bad or wrong, there are good reasons for doing it (and they've been touting their safer alternative, "PPAPI", for a while), just that the way they're they were doing it is was really shockingly poor.
So what should you do?
Well, in the short term, use Firefox or something else that still supports the plugin.
Long term? Well, the Java plug-in is fundamentally incompatible with Google's PPAPI and the other browser vendors aren't in love with Google's new API anyway. So long-term, hope that Firefox continues support (they've said they intend to for the foreseeable future) and that despite the fact that I'm seriously over-committed, I find a way, someday, to build a new version of Pocket-Monkey using modern technologies. Until then, it's the "experimental" web games and all their flaws.
Thanks, TJ. I noticed that too, when I switched from Firefox to Chrome; so I just got rid of the Java, and play here without it. I know you sure go through a lot to keep this site not only afloat, but running as smoothly as possible. All your hard work is not taken for granted. I thank you very much! Make sure you get a little rest in between all your work! :)

TJ, I can't move again. I'm getting a Java Error and reinstalling Java did not help. Neither did changing my security settings. I'm not sure what else to do.
I am also having this same issue. I have tried everything I could think of and nothing has helped. I can log in but when I click on a game,a window pops up with something about my security settings. So I tried to adjust my settings and still cant play anything on pocket-monkey. Help Please.

If I cant son get Pocket Monkey to work right will no longer playing on here gerryhome@ rogers.com
For Browser Type, choose Web Browser (without Java)
Click Update Profile at the bottom of the page
The non-Java games have several bugs. You can't accept a draw. In Backgammon, always use the Roll button (not the dice) to roll, and always double-check your move before you send it (that's probably good advice for any game).
There is some possibility I'll get time this year to modernize Pocket-Monkey. But believe it if and when it happens, and if it does, it won't be for months.
